Market Comments:
The first quarter of 2009 continued
the broad market weakness witnessed
in 2008, with every major index (excluding
the Nasdaq 100) posting a decline.
Similar to last quarter, stocks sold
off sharply across the board during
the first two months of the year,
with the S&P 500 down over twenty-five
percent by early March. Investors
looked to companies with stronger
balance sheets and near term business
prospects, causing growth indices
to significantly outperform their
value counterparts. Small cap securities
experienced significant declines
in excess of the broader market,
as economic concerns led to questions
regarding their future viability.
